Self-care may sound selfish, but it’s actually an essential part of recovery. Taking time to practice self-care can mean taking time to heal physically and mentally. By doing this, you’re able to better cope with your feelings, boost your confidence and have the energy required to take on challenges and do the work required to get (and stay) sober.
The way that people care for themselves can vary from person to person – whether you prefer to go for a massage or for a long hike – and part of making self-care part of your recovery plan is trying different activities to see what works best to reenergize you.
