Despite the growing legalization of both recreational an
d medicinal marijuana, the dangers of the drug still exist. This is especially true since marijuana has become much more potent over the years, with higher levels of THC, the psychoactive component of the drug. In fact, the amount of THC in pot has increased more than 150% since 1983.This new high-potency pot is causing psychiatric issues, including psychosis, memory problems and addiction. What’s more, today’s pot is often laced with heroin, cocaine, insecticides and embalming fluid – all unbeknownst to the user.Could You Be Addicted to Pot?Research shows that approximately 9 percent, or about 1 in 11, of those who use marijuana will become addicted. Here are some of the warning signs:
You build up a tolerance: Just like other drugs, regular pot use can result in increased tolerance. In other words, you need more and more of the drug to experience the same high.
You’ve experienced withdrawal: Signs of withdrawal include loss of appetite, irritability, insomnia or anxiety.
You use more than intended: Does this scenario sound familiar? You say to yourself that “you’re just going to take a few hits,” and then end up smoking the entire joint by the end of the night.
You’re unable to cut down or stop: If you’ve tried to quit and failed, it’s likely a sign that you need help.
You spend lots of time getting high:Do you spend a great deal of your time getting high, waiting to get high or looking to buy marijuana? Along these same lines, those with marijuana addiction often replace recreational activities with those that revolve around getting high.
You continue, despite any problems it causes: For example, if drug use is jeopardizing your job (for instance, you’re always late ) and you still continue to smoke pot.
You use as a way to escape from problem: Do you tend to get high to cope with life – from relationships to job stress?
You depend on the drug for creativity or relaxation:If you need to get high before being creative or to “truly relax,” it’s a sign of dependency.
