Experiential Therapy

Northstar has implemented an extensive experiential therapy and wellness program throughout all levels of care at the facility. Unlike traditional therapies, experiential approaches take clients out of their comfort zone and get them to experience authentic situations and reactions that would not happen within traditional treatment modalities. This way, clients can learn a variety of skills and experience concepts firsthand to help them heal. These skills can include:

  • Relying on others
  • Trusting others
  • Working as a team
  • Listening to and providing positive feedback
  • Asking for help
  • Improving self-confidence
  • Staying strong through fear

Northstar offers a variety of experiential therapy activities, including:

  • Outdoor activities
  • Group activities
  • Guided meditation
  • Yoga
  • Acupuncture

Health and Wellness

Taking care of your body through healthy habits and routines is critical for long-term recovery. For this reason, Northstar has implemented a general wellness program to teach clients skills that they can continue to use even after they leave the facility. This has several benefits for those in recovery, including reduced cravings, reduced anxiety and depression, and increased self-confidence. Some of the wellness activities at Northstar include:

  • Group meal planning and cooking
  • Staff facilitated hikes
  • Staff facilitated workouts
  • Gym access
  • Yoga at the facility and off-site

Individualized Care

Northstar Transitions offers both men’s and women’s residential treatment. Each client who comes into the facility is treated to a custom treatment program that fits their recovery needs. The facility considers each clients’ medical history, addiction severity, family dynamics, employment status, lifestyle preference, and mental health diagnosis to ensure they are given treatment that will make sense for them. Because the two residential programs are gender-based, treatment can become more specific by addressing the issues that only those particular groups may go through.

Family-Focused Care

Northstar understands that addiction is a family disease. It doesn’t just affect the person struggling with active addiction, but it also impacts those around them. Relationships are often disintegrated over time as addiction progresses, but Northstar wants to help the entire family unit heal. We believe that many of the misunderstandings during addiction are rooted in stigmas and misconceptions about the disease. For this reason, we offer disease education and counseling for the client’s family members if needed. Over time, the family can begin to understand that the person who was struggling can make amends with their family members. This way, the person is set up for long term healing when they return home. Their family will know how to help them heal and stay on track in their sobriety.

Aftercare Planning

When your time at Northstar begins to come to an end, it will be time to decide aftercare treatment. This is typically for those in residential treatment, but others can receive the same planning should they need it to ensure their recovery sustains for the long term. Northstar typically includes sober living arrangements and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) near the client’s home area in aftercare planning. It is also possible to stay at Northstar for aftercare by enrolling in its 12-week IOP and living in a sober living home in the local area.
