Insurance companies cover addiction recovery treatment because it is considered a medical necessity. Addiction is recognized by our health system as a chronic disease that can have serious physical, emotional, and social consequences.

Effective addiction treatment can improve an individual's overall health and quality of life, and may also prevent future medical problems and costs. Insurance coverage for addiction treatment can help reduce the financial burden on individuals and their families, making it more accessible and affordable.

Our goal at NorthStar is to focus on healing and recovery for our clients and we understand that cost of treatment can create unneeded stress before, during, and after care. We have worked diligently to partner with as many insurers as possible to reduce this strain for our clients and their families so they can focus on recovery.

What Insurance Covers

Your exact coverage will depend on what the details of your policy are, but typically, the following services and treatment are covered by most insurance plans:

  • Continual Care (Therapy, Counseling, etc.)
  • Co-Occurring Mental Health Treatment
  • Dual Diagnosis Mental Health Treatment
  • Inpatient Addiction Recovery
  • Medication-Assisted Treatment
  • Maintenance Medication Treatment
  • Outpatient Care

How to Get Insurance

There are several ways to obtain insurance coverage for addiction treatment, including:

  • Employer-Sponsored Insurance: Many employers offer health insurance benefits to their employees. If you are currently employed, you may be able to enroll in a plan that covers addiction treatment.
  • Private Insurance: If you do not have employer-sponsored insurance, you can purchase a private insurance plan. There are many insurance providers that offer plans that cover addiction treatment, so be sure to compare different options to find the best plan for your needs and budget.
  • Dependent Insurance: If you are under 26 years old or partnered with someone who has an employer sponsored insurance plan, you can likely be enrolled as a dependent of your parents/guardians or your partner.
  • Government-Sponsored Insurance: If you are unable to afford private insurance, you may be eligible for government-sponsored insurance programs such as Medicaid or Medicare. Many recent changes to public programs have leaned in favor of those in need of addiction treatment, so you may likely be more covered than you think under these insurance plans.

Keep in mind that even if you do not enroll into these programs during their open enrollment period, you may need to instead wait for a qualifying life event that will permit you to enroll. Here are some examples of qualifying life events:

  • Childbirth
  • Divorce
  • Leaving Incarceration
  • Losing Insurance Coverage
  • Marriage
  • Moving out of state

Luckily, even moving out of state for the sole purpose of having addiction treatment is considered a qualifying life event.

Understanding Insurance Networks

Provider networks refer to a group of healthcare providers (such as treatment centers, doctors, hospitals, and clinics) that have agreed to participate in an insurance plan and accept the insurance company's payment in full for covered services. This is known as “in-network.”

When an individual has insurance, they can choose a treatment center from the insurance company's network. These providers have agreed to charge lower fees for their services to individuals with insurance and the insurance company, in turn, will pay a portion of the cost of the services provided.

If an individual seeks care from a treatment center outside of their insurance network, they may have to pay a higher out-of-pocket cost, as the insurance company may not cover the full cost of the services provided.

NorthStar Transitions understands that cost can be a huge burden on an individual or family seeking treatment and has joined the networks of most commercial insurance companies to reduce that burden.
